Originally from the UK, Emma initially trained as Nursery Nurse in 1999 and went onto work in special needs schools for 9 years. In 2008 she qualified as a Hospital Play Specialist - Specialised Play for Sick Children where she worked supporting children, young people and their families in St George's hospital, London's largest major acute hospital. For several years she worked for the NHS in the community setting providing health care and respite to children, young people with complex health needs and those with terminal illness in their homes.
Arriving in Perth, Western Australia in 2009 she graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Counselling from Notre Dame, Fremantle. Since then Emma has worked in not for profit agencies providing general counselling support to adults; drug and alcohol for adults in the Therapeutic Community; children's counselling and suicide prevention and deliberate self harm in young people and private hospital setting supporting adults with eating disorders, addictions and mood disorders on an inpatient ward.
Her therapeutic approach is holistic and tailored to the individual's needs, taking a trauma informed approach to her client work supporting people across the lifespan with a wide range of presenting issues. She has a special interest in women's health (fertility), perinatal issues (perinatal loss) as well as a passion for supporting men and non birthing partners whoa re often missed. Using an integrative approach to counselling means drawing on and blending types of therapeutic interventions such as; cognitive behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness based interventions and strengths based practice. Ultimately, the therapeutic relationship and creating a safe space is deeply important.
With 25 years in the helping professions Emma is a Counsellor registered with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and is a member of the College of Supervisors (ACA). She has worked as a counsellor, supervisor for over 10 years, with experience providing therapy and supervision to individuals, and groups. She has previously worked in the non-government and not for profit and private sectors in various roles including senior counsellor, supervisor, and counselling services manager.
